明朝晚期，锦衣卫镇抚使刘其忠因不甘向东厂称臣，被举家灭门，行刑者众多，其首名唤“金罗刹”。二十年后，幸存的两位刘家后人化名尹阡、尹陌，为寻找仇人“金罗刹”，兄弟二人先后进锦衣卫入职。。Morse finds himself the subject of a murder investigation when his friend, Beryl Newsome, is murdered at a rehearsal of the Magic Flute and he foolishly touches the murder weapon. Morse is suspended and DCI Bottomley, with DS Lewis assisting him, is put in charge of the case.
